When approached, react quickly, but nicely!

As you step off the hotel grounds, you are sure to be approached by any number of Jamaicans offering a wide variety of products and services. It is good to remember that Jamaicans are a proud people. The sales pitch might be persistent, but they will not beg. When you are approached, the quicker and more confidently you react the better!

If you are not interested in what is being sold -- simply look the seller in the eye, smile and say "No Thanks Mon". If you are quick and confident in your response, you'll be surprised at how quickly they will move off in search of a new prospect. If you appear uncomfortable and unsure or look down at the ground, you can expect the salesman to follow you! He will be thinking -- It's only a matter of time!

Take heart! All the beach vendors on the beach where you are staying know each other. Within a day or two, as soon as it is known that you are not buying, you'll notice sharp decline in offers. Look at it this way. Every day brings new arrivals and new opportunities!

If, on the other hand, you are interested in what is being offered -- there is one thing to remember. You are expected to bargain at the best of your ability. Jamaican's love a challenge!
