Books about Jamaica and recommended reading!
Reading books about Jamaica, the Jamaican language, the Jamaican culture and Jamaican history before and during your vacation is a great way to fully explore this fascinating island and get to know it well!
As a frequent visitor to Jamaica, I have been always fascinated by the Jamaican language, Jamaican words and it's Patois (patwa), Rasta Iyaric and Jamaican slang. While on vacation in Jamaica, communicating with the Jamaican people is interesting and fun. The Jamaican language is much more than words. It includes lots of expression! Your hands and arms are most definatley needed to fully explain a situation.
During my visits, I've been able to pick up many Jamaican words and understand the Jamaican language but, unfortunately, I am still much better at understanding Jamaicans than speaking like them.
I've finally found a
comprehensive, user friendly way to learn the Jamaican language
, the first really good book of it's kind that I have ever seen that includes a pronunciation guide, use of Jamaican words, parts of speech and more.
Here are some other great reads!
Rasta Emperor Haile Sellassie & The Rastafarians By Jah Ahkell
Garvey His Work & Impact By Rupert Lewis
Haile Sellassie I: The Formative Years 1892-1936 By Harold G. Marcus
--they can all be found in the
Non-Fiction section of Around The Way Books!
It's always a good idea to pick a comprehensive travel guide to take along with you. Here are a few of my favorites. You might be able to find a few of these at your local library, or visit your favorite online bookseller. These are all currently available at www.amazon.com.
