Are you shopping for a calling card for Jamaica? What you need to know before you buy!
A calling card for Jamaica is supposed to be the least expensive way to call the island. FIND OUT WHY THAT'S NOT ALWAYS TRUE!
Whether you call friends and family or are calling direct to check on your travel arrangements, the cost of calling Jamaica will add up quickly. If you are calling someone in Jamaica with a cell phone, you need to be especially careful!
FACT: Hardly anyone in Jamaica has a land line anymore. Cell phones have taken over the island! This is the most important fact to keep in mind when selecting a phone card, or using your phone company call Jamaica. Even voice over IP suppliers, like Vonnage, charge extra when calling a cell phone!
Over the years I've tried many different methods for calling Jamaica--Vonnage, Comcast, Pre-Paid Calling Cards, etc.
By far, the best way to same money and talk longer is to sign up with RingYard.
RingYard is better than a calling card for Jamaica. You sign up for FREE and register the phone(s) you want to call from (land line or cell phone), pick you own short pin, pay for the minutes (increments as low as $10) and you are good to go.
You can find less expensive calling cards for Jamaica, but becareful. The advertised rate per minute is always for land line calls (per minute rate to cell phones is always higher). In addition, the monthly usage charges and fees to connect calls will eat you alive. If you are calling Jamaicans (most of them have cell phones), use RingYard. You'll love the $.19 cent a minute rate (with one minute rounding)--$.18 a minute to land lines.
Keep in mind, with RingYard there are no connection fees or surcharges and the minutes don't expire. Your minutes roll over from month to month and you can buy more minutes online in seconds.
With calling cards for Jamaica the hidden costs will quickly add up. Before you know it all your minutes are gone!
Even the least expensive pinless calling card for Jamaica will charge 4.9 cents a minute ($.19 cents a minute to a cell phone), $.99 cents weekly fee, and round up your charges to the nearest 3 minutes and has a $.79 charge when calling from a payphone.
Calling cards for Jamaica are not as cheap as they appear to be.
Read fine print!
So, save yourself the hassle and sign up with RingYard!
Calling from Jamaica!
Calling home from Jamaica is quite another matter. As I mentioned earlier cell phones have taken over the island. They are cheap and easy to get. For a less than $30.00 you can purchase your own cell phone (no contract at all) to use while in Jamaica. The best part--calling the U.S. is almost free. If you run out of minutes, just pay a few dollars for some more minutes and you are ready to go. No more worries about the high cost of calling from your hotel or, even worse, coming home and getting a huge phone bill in the mail a month or two later. (It happend to me -- $200 phone bill for just a few short calls.)
