Visit a woodland cottage, take a cool swim in the Caribbean sea and lunch at rustic seaside restaurant. These mountain hikes are for the more adventurous who want to get to the top of the mountain - around 2,300 feet (701m). Hiking in Jamaica and the Bluefield Mountains is a great experience. You'll feel a wonderful sense of satisfaction when you reach the western peak.
From there, you'll look down on the turkey vultures as they soar below. It is unlikely you'll see any other tourists in this relatively remote area. The silence is wonderful -- just the sound of birds and the feel of the cool breeze. On the upwards journey we may well meet up with people in the communities as they go about their daily work on their hill farms growing pimento, cassava and yam. In season, we will taste some of the local fruits: mango, sour sop, sweet sop. We will visit old wooden dwellings to see how the people used to live in days gone by without the benefit of electricity and running water.
Climbing at a steady pace on mountain paths and donkey tracks you will enjoy magnificent panoramic views over deep wooded valleys and old plantations such as Shafston, Oristano and Mt. Edgecombe. Pass through forests and woodlands, alive with the sounds of birds and see brightly colored butterflies. This is the real Jamaica, a natural paradise. The beautiful mangrove and forest fringed coastline stretching from South Negril Point to the north-west and St. Elizabeth to the South-east is far below. In the turquoise and aquamarine Caribbean Sea we can see coral reefs and watch fishing boats at work in historic Bluefields Bay – it was from here that Henry Morgan set sail in 1670 to sack the treasury at Panama.
Captain Bligh of Mutiny on The Bounty and breadfruit fame also stayed here in 1793. Philip Henry Gosse, the Victorian naturalist, wrote his two famous books, 'Birds of Jamaica' & 'A Naturalists Sojourn in Jamaica' while staying here from 1844 to 1846. At the top of the mountain we will rest a while at Rasta Roberts small house and enjoy a vibe and some music with him as we cool off.
We will then be picked up by motor vehicle and enjoy an amazing, breathtakingly beautiful drive down zig-zagging roads, through tiny communities such as Bath and Kentucky to the coast below. As you can imagine, after all that exercise, it’s time for total relaxation and a well earned meal (included in the package) in tranquil surroundings at a local seaside restaurant.
