Interesting Jamaican Facts
Some interesting Jamaican facts I'd like to share with you -- Located in the Caribbean Sea, Jamaica can be found 600 miles south of Miami, Florida and ninety miles south of Cuba. It is located 18 degrees north of the equator, is 146 miles long, with widths varying between 22 and 51 miles. Jamaica can claim an amazingly beautiful 633 miles of coastline lined with bays, coves and gorgeous Jamaican beaches! The island consists mainly of uplands, with almost 1/2 of Jamaica lying 327 feet above sea level. Blue Mountain Peak, the highest point, rises to almost 7500 feet. Mountains run right through the island's center, with a narrow coastal plain on either side. The
climate of Jamaica
varies from region to region. Where the rainfall is sufficient, there are large areas of tropical rain forest. The drier parts of the island consist of dry savannas with thorny scrub. Some coastal areas are still fringed with mangrove swamps. Jamaica's population is approaching 3 million. Over 75% of Jamaicans are of African origin. Roughly 15% are of mixed African/European ancestry, over 3% are East Indian/African East Indian, just over 1% are Chinese/African and less than 1% are European. Thus the Jamaican motto "Out of many one people". Jamaica has something for everyone. Yes, there are beautiful white sandy beaches and a warm tropical climate. You'll also find spectacular mountains where they grow the world's best coffee, fantastic reefs for diving, tumbling waterfalls and much more. Certainly, one of Jamaica's best kept secrets is it's people. Jamaicans are well known for being sassy, sharp and straight-talking, in a kind of non-nonsense way. But, they are equally charming, engagingly laid-back and friendly.
