Jamaican birds -- woodland bird watching with guides & lunch at seaside restaurant.
See plenty of Jamaican birds while birdwatching in Bluefields, one of Jamaica's Important Bird Areas (IBA). Located just an hour from Negril, it's also one of the most scenic areas on the island.
This tour is for the naturalist who wants a serious introduction to the many endemic species of beautiful Jamaican birds and butterflies. The views over the bay and from Savannah la Mar to Whitehouse are breathtaking. You will pass through pimento plantations and hope to see the elusive Mountain Witch. Other birds on our route include the Jabbering Crow, Streamertail and Mango Hummingbirds, Jamaican Oriole, Stripe Headed Tanager, Greater Antillean Bullfinch, Yellow Shouldered Grass Quit, Olive throated parakeet, parrotlets and the occasional endangered Yellow Billed Parrot. We will also find observe nest sites of the remarkably approachable Jamaican Robin.
Among the butterflies, you will be searching for the uncommon Jamaican Admiral and large orange Orion while observing the more numerous Satyr, Dorcas, Zebra, Malachite and Jamaican Polydamus and Thersites swallowtails. The walk climbs at an easy pace with frequent stops to observe, photograph and discuss sightings. The outstanding beauty of this tour and the birding and nature opportunities with knowledgeable guides and local experts will make this one of the highlights of your visit to Jamaica
Jamaica has more endemics than any other island in the Caribbean and offers some excellent birding. In all, we have around 290 species including a large number of winter visitors, transients and vagrants that can be observed depending on the season. We are exceptionally fortunate at Bluefields to see a tremendous number of species of birds. Of the 28 Jamaican endemic species 20 have been observed, plus an additional 13 endemic sub-species in the local area.
In winter, through migration, the number of species nearly doubles. These migrants can arrive in August and remain here until May. For birders from North America, it is a good opportunity to see species that do not occur in their home territory. For those visiting from Europe, the winter season is an ideal time to visit and to catch the mainly North American influx. Many of the species that come at this time add to the resident populations. In spring, a few migrating species breed here. (Black Whiskered Vireo, Caribbean Martin, Antillean Night Hawk). You will be looking for Jamaican birds in the beautiful Bluefields Mountains - an area made famous by Victorian Naturalist Philip Henry Gosse who stayed at Bluefields Great House from 1844 -1846. We follow old parochial roads and well defined tracks through woodlands and forest with plenty of time to observe and enjoy the spectacular surroundings and panoramic views.
All the tours are accompanied by knowledgeable and friendly local Jamaican tour guides. Lunch is included at a sea-side restaurant with shore birds and waders providing additional spotting opportunities while we eat. Each Birder is given a complementary Jamaican Species Check list as a souvenir and record of great birding at Bluefields. Walking distances, during the tour, are not great. Probably around a mile in all on easy woodland tracks at an elevation of around 500ft. For the more sure footed we can climb and explore the narrower paths.
