and other National Symbols

The Jamaican flag and other national symbols (emblems) of Jamaica, including the Jamaican coat of arms, can be found at the Jamaican Information Service.

The flag, first raised on Independence Day August 6, 1962, signifies the birth of the nation. The symbolism of the colors of the flag are described in this quote. “The sun shineth, the land is green and the people are strong and creative”.

Black - Strength & Creativity of the people.
Gold - Natural wealth and beauty of the sunlight.
Green - Hope and agricultural resources.

The national bird of Jamaica is the Doctor Bird, or Swallow Tail Hummingbird. It lives only in Jamaica as one of 320 species of hummingbirds on the island.
