You'll discover places that Jamaican's don't even know about. Enjoy exploring hidden Westmoreland, the Bluefield Mountains, see old churches and wooden fretwork buildings, stop and visit a traditional Jamaican bar, eat jelly coconut, and finally relax and enjoy lunch at a hospitable, rustic, beach-side restaurant on the Bay.
Reliable Adventures Jamaica and their friendly, knowledgeable Jamaican tour guides escort you through the colorful and lush tropical landscape. Travel together to the Jamaican mountains and the peaks of the Bluefields. You'll hear all about Jamaican history, the rich heritage and local culture. On your journey though time, you'll see local fishermen at Belmont and hear a little about their seemingly changeless but dangerous, sea-faring lifestyle.
In historic Bluefields, the first Spanish settlement in South, we pass by Bluefields Great House where Sir Henry Morgan, pirate and Governor of Jamaica stayed in the 17th century and from where he set sail with his fleet to sack the treasury in Panama. Captain Bligh, of Mutiny on the Bounty fame, stayed here in 1793 You'll see one of his original Breadfruit trees planted on the island. Passing by Oristano Great House, perched precariously on a rocky hill top, our last stop in Bluefields is for a quick peek at the beautifully fine example of a cut-stone and London brick, early 19th century Anglican Church of St. Thomas.
Departing next via the picturesque rural communities of Brighton and Robins River, (often referred to by Victorian naturalist Philip Henry Gosse during his 1844-1846 sojourn), we pass through old plantations and provision grounds and see field crops: yam, cassava, banana, plantain, sweet potato which are locally grown and taken to the still thriving country markets. We briefly stop at Salem Teachers’ Cottage and then the Moravian Church to take photographs before arriving at the quaint and prettily decorated Joan’s, 3R’s Restaurant and Bar at the aptly named Beeston Spring. Here, over a 1000ft up in the foothills, we meet and chat with Joan, the owner and relax under a shady tree for a while to enjoy her traditional Jelly Coconut and perhaps purchase some local craft items.

From Beeston Spring we wind our way upwards via the thickly wooded Cho-cho Gulley and the remote little farming communities of Bog, New Works and Bognie before reaching the upper peaks of The Bluefields Mountains (around 2,500ft).Turkey Vultures can be seen soaring in the cool mountain air, far below. Here, we gaze across panoramic views of the mountains of the rugged interior of the parish of St Elizabeth. We then take an exhilarating, winding drive down Cave Mountain road with stops on the way to take in the spectacular views over the coastline towards Sav-la-mar, the sugar estates of Frome and the plains of Westmoreland and Negril spread out before us like a relief map. Next, we will get a bird’s eye view of Paradise Pen where there were settlements of Taino Amerindians, the first inhabitants of Jamaica, dating from 650AD. At the bottom of the mountain we take a well deserved breather at Casa Mariner, a hospitable, rustic, beach-side restaurant on the Bay. Here we enjoy some real Jamaican food and a cool beverage on the mangrove fringed seashore with its back-drop of towering forested Bluefields mountains.
