Bluefields Eco-Walk!

This nature walk, located just an hours drive from Negril is well worth the drive. This easy-going walk offers fantastic views over wooded mountainsides and the coastline far below. Learn about Jamaican history, medicinal herbs, visit a tiny mountain village, commune with nature and swim and lunch by the sea at Bluefields.

Our journey begins at Belmont beach where fishing has been a way of life since the Taino Indians more than 1400 years ago. We then move by vehicle through Sea Grape walk towards the historic Bluefields Police Station.

Passing Oristano Great House we pause to look briefly at Bluefields Great House, inhabited by Henry Morgan and Captain Bligh, who planted Breadfruit here in 1793. We then make our way via River Top through Retirement Community to our start point beside the first Salvation Army HQ in the Caribbean.
Our easy walking route starts at around 400 feet and follows a well defined old parochial road which winds gently up the hill side. We pass through shaded woodlands and learn about medicinal herbs and their uses.

The sound of birds fills the air and brightly colored butterflies are seen at every turn. We pause briefly to enjoy the view over Bluefields Bay, its coral reef set in aquamarine and turquoise seas. It’s like a picture postcard – except its real. Our next stop is at the western viewpoint where we look towards Sav-la-mar and Negril in the far distance.

A little further on we enter the tiny woodland village of Belvedere (at around 900 feet) where the few remaining inhabitants still have no running water or electricity. All around, there are Pimento trees and other fruiting trees. We hope to meet Bob, one of the villagers and are invited to tour his little wooden house. It is as if time has stood still in this quiet corner of Jamaica
After a short rest, we return slowly down-hill to complete our 2 1/2 hour journey while listening to tales of local history from the Taino in 600AD to the present. There is then, an opportunity for a relaxing swim in the warm Caribbean Sea. This is followed by lunch (included in the package) at a typical Jamaican seaside restaurant.
