The weather in Jamaica is truly FANTASTIC!
The weather in Jamaica, and all of the Caribbean is consistently warm and tropical. The driest season, also the one with the lowest temperatures, runs from mid-November through April. During this peak travel season, the days are generally warm and dry and the evenings are cool and comfortable.
By contrast, the weather in Negril Jamaica is warmest in the Summer months. Trade winds and sea breezes offer some relief during the day, but for comfortable sleeping, air conditioning becomes more important. Negril Beach, as compared to other areas on the North Coast, is generally more sheltered. Scuba and snorkel activities are not often disrupted by strong winds. Generally the breezes blow onshore by day and offshore by night. Often, you can experience strong, gusty winds in Montego Bay, Ocho Rios and Portland, while in Negril Jamaica, the weather remains relatively calm.
The mountains run right through the island's center, with a narrow coastal plain on either side. The climate of Jamaica will vary from region to region. On the coast, the trade winds and landward sea winds, make even the higher temperatures in the Summer tolerable. In the mountains, temperatures are much cooler especially at night in the highest elevations Rain will fall at any time of the year with most of the rain falling in the mountainous areas. Normally the rain comes in heavy showers of short duration often followed by sunshine. Down on the coast, in Negril, showers can be intense but more often than not they are light and brief. The showers provide a welcome cool-off and are often followed by bright sunshine. Most of the rain falls in the late afternoon or early evening and about 20% of the rain falls during the night. There is a short rainy season that usually starts in May or June. The rainiest season of the year begins in August or September, reaching a peak in October and continuing somewhat through November. Any descriptions of weather and climate of Jamaica would not be complete without some specific information about hurricane season! The hurricane season, in the Caribbean, officially stretches from late June through late November with most of the storm activity in the Caribbean from mid-August through October. Jamaica is located in the Caribbean 'hurricane belt' and; even though the weather in Jamaica is susceptible to hurricanes and tropical storms during this time, the chances of a hurricane beating up your vacation spot is very small. Jamaica rarely experiences hurricanes but a strong storm, during hurricane season, can disrupt the weather for miles around with rain and wind.
