What to expect from my trip to Negril, Jamaica--here's the scoop!
Knowing what to expect from a destination before you go is crucial. No one likes suprises, unless it's their birthday!
I am a travel agent in the U.S. with about 30 years in the industry. Recently, I spent a considerable amount of time reading numerous reviews online, logged by travelers, about personal experiences at various hotels is Jamaica and Negril, in particular. The reviews were posted on a popular travel advisor website. What I discovered, while reading these reviews, prompted this article.
The first thing I noticed was the difference in reviews written by seasoned travelers and those who had traveled little or not at all. There was also a significant difference, in the reviews, as to whether they had experienced traveling in the Caribbean before.
Personally, I’ve traveled to Jamaica dozens of times and, during those years, I’ve been witness to countless changes. I discovered Negril, about 20 years ago or so, after spending several enjoyable vacations on the North Coast, specifically in the Ocho Rios area. Jamaica is a unique destination and each resort area has it’s own distinct personality of sorts. I will try to give you, the first time visitor, a good, honest idea of what to expect.
From my point of view Jamaica is an incredible destination with much to offer; beautiful countryside, diverse resort areas (mountains , tropical jungles, and sandy beaches), tons of attractions and activities, very friendly people, and an unlimited variety of accommodations. You can be as busy as you like or just rest and relax.
It is my desire to make sure, before you choose Jamaica and Negril as your vacation destination, that you have a realistic idea of what to expect!
What can I expect from Negril as a destination?
What can I expect from the Jamaican culture?
What can I expect from the Jamaican people?
What can I expect from my accommodations?
What can I expect from Jamaican restaurants and food?
What should I know about Jamaican currency and the exchange rate?
When you are making plans to travel, it's important to know what to expect as well as be able to convey a clear understanding of what you are looking for. What do you most want to get out of this vacation? Are you looking for “non-stop” busy or do you just want some rest and relaxation?
Travelers that get the most satisfaction from traveling have taken the time to properly research a destination and the accommodations available. They read between the lines. What someone else enjoys might not be for you.
Whether you are needing some well-deserved rest and relaxation and desire a break from your hectic lifestyle, Negril can fit the bill. If you are bored and tired of doing nothing at home, and would enjoy non-stop games and fun, Negril can fit the bill. Just do the research and pick your resort carefully. Here are some helpful do’s and don’ts for your trip to Negril.
Do, decide if you want to experience a new and different culture.
Do, take the time to research and decide if this destination is for you.
Do, try to be honest with yourself and pre-determine what expect from your accommodations.
Do the research necessary and pick the best accommodation to suit your own personal needs and wants.
Do, if you experience something other than you expected, accept small disappointments and the unexpected as part of the overall travel experience.
Do, if faced with dissapointment, calmly explain to the management what you expected and what you'd like done--then give them a chance to make it better.
Do, plan for comfort. Bringing beach towels and if you like them, a few hand towels and washcloths.
Do, plan to show your appreciation to bellman, maids, bartenders, waiters, security etc. by tipping.
Don’t pay 3-star prices and expect 5-star treatment.
Don't expect everything to be just like home.
Try not to be rude and demanding with the locals (drivers, waiters, housekeeping staff), as it won’t get you want you want.
Enjoy your visit to Jamaica and most especially Negril!
