How do I know what to expect from Negril?

Knowing what to expect from Negril before you go, might make or break your vacation.

When I discovered Negril, some 20+ years ago, it was in transition. I feared that the “Old Negril” would give way to the larger all-inclusive resorts. Everyone said the all-inclusive would mean the end of Negril as we knew it.

Yes, it has changed since then but, not as much as we feared.Negril, of all the resort areas in Jamaica, has the widest variety of accommodations to choose from. In addition, you are able to stay directly on one of the Caribbean's most beautiful beaches, Seven Mile Beach Negril, or out on the secluded West End, Negril Cliffs.

Now, tiny guest houses and smaller boutique-style hotels continue to thrive and peacefully coexist with the larger all-inclusive resorts. The “Old Negril“ is still there, it‘s just a little harder to find. There are still plenty of great nightspots and wonderful restaurants.

You now have the choice of staying a la carte and the freedom to explore and experience all of Negril or,

if you are more comfortable with the idea of non-stop activities (where everything is included in one rate) think about staying in one of the larger all-inclusive resorts. Inside the grounds of a larger all-inclusive, you might experience the feeling of being separated from the outside world. Local people are not free to come and go as they are in the small and medium size non-inclusive hotels and resorts. Depending on what you want from your vacation, this may or may not be a good thing.

Recently, a few traditionally non-inclusive hotels have added optional packages. The packages include some meals and drinks. they are usually less expensive, but don't include as many inclusives as the larger resorts. This can be a nice choice for those wanting to pre-pay most of their meals and drinks.
